Sara Riel: Mushroom

I thought it was fitting to post this today, after the very real mushroom I posted yesterday.

This lovely mural has been on a wall in Hverfisgata since 2012. It was designed by Sara Riel, whose work I have posted here before (here, here and here). It’s part of her Natural Kingdoms series and represents the Kingdom of Fungi:

Work in progress

About a week ago I was driving through the Fellahverfi neighbourhood in Breiðholt, one of Reykjavík’s suburbs, and spotted a large painting on the wall of an apartment block. I didn’t stop to photograph it then because I had a passenger with me, but when I made a trip up there again a couple of days ago to do some shopping in the nearby Polish supermarket, I noticed that the painting had changed and what had, frankly, looked like a weirdly coloured, elongated vulva in solid colours was in fact the base layer of something more elaborate. It is now being turned into a feather-shape composed of what looks like birds, and the artist was, in fact, hard at work with her airbrush. From the style, I’m guessing this is Sara Riel, but we will see for sure when  it’s finished and signed.
