The deterrent

Ravens are considered vermin in Iceland and as such can be killed with impunity anywhere and everywhere, except in conservation areas where all hunting is forbidden and in urban areas where shooting is forbidden. I happen to like ravens because they are intelligent and seem to have a sense of humour, but that doesn’t close my eyes to the fact that they can cause an immense amount of damage to the smaller birds (some of them protected) that they prey on. Even so, a sight like this really saddens and disgusts me:

It was probably killed to be used as a kind of scarecrow for other ravens, to keep them away from a nearby nesting area of Arctic terns.
