21 days to Christmas and the malls are decked

I went to the Smáralind mall yesterday, not to shop, but to look at the Christmas decorations and window displays. The mall itself was decorated much as it has been in the last several years: the same giant baubles hanging from the ceiling, the same pairs of small Christmas trees dotted about the place, and the same huge tree at the same end as usual. I’m looking forward to seeing the gingerbread houses when they are set up. Here is a glimpse of the big tree:

Happy Christmas!

Today is Aðfangadagur in Iceland. The name of this day is usually translated into English as “Christmas Eve”, but the word actually means “the day of gathering provisions”, because traditionally no work could be done on Christmas Day and everything had to be ready before midnight. Today is a half holiday on which most people stop work at noon and Christmas officially begins at 6 p.m., with Christians either attending a Christmas church service or listening to it on the radio. After the Christmas meal we open the presents and read the cards. Here are some Christmas decorations to get you in the Holiday mood:

5 days to Christmas

I think this is supposed to be an edgy Christmas tree, but to be frank it looks to me like something you would find in the boudoir of a goth drag queen at any time of the year. Maybe it’s a hint to the men who buy suits from the shop to release their inner goddesses?
